If you regularly use a script which reads from right-to-left as well as English, you may find that sometimes the English script appears right-to-left, like mirror writing. Sometimes this problem occurs during the proofreading process- when comments are added they may show as right-to-left. If you are using a Windows computer, changing the direction of text is easy through using the ‘left-to-right’ command.
Word for Mac does not currently support this feature and so, if you encounter this problem, the only option is to copy and paste the text into a new document. Please do send Microsoft a message asking them to update this! Hopefully when enough people do, this feature should become available on Macs as well!
Word 2007
The first thing you will need to do is to add the ‘left-to-right’ command to the Quick Access Toolbar. In order to do this, click the arrow next to the ‘redo’ button and choose ‘More Commands’ from the drop down list.
On the next screen, you will have the option to choose other commands to add to the ribbon. If you can’t see the ‘left-to-right’ command, chose ‘All Commands’ from the top window
Then scroll down and choose ‘Left-to Right Text Direction’.
Now the button will be displayed in the ribbon.
Now put your cursor into the balloon where the text is shown right-to-left, click the button, and the text should switch to left-to-right.
Repeat this process for all comment boxes.
Word 2010
In Word 2010, the same applies, but the command has a different name (‘Ltr run’):
In 2010, the button shows as a little green blob, in a slightly different place, on the right hand side of the ribbon.
Word 2003
Again, in Word 2003, the process is almost identical but has a different name again: (Ltr para). When you have chosen this command in the ‘Customize’ window, a toolbar will open. The RTL button shows as a paragraph symbol with a blue triangle after it, the LTR button as a paragraph symbol with a blue triangle before it.
